Roasting the dal first. That's the move most brands skip.

A standard chakli dough uses unroasted dal flour faster, more consistent, easier to scale. Roasting requires attention: you have to watch it, smell it, pull it at exactly the right moment.

Thangamma's Kaaram Chakli starts with farm-sourced urad dal and chana dal roasted before grinding. This single step changes the flavour completely adding a deep, warm, caramelised nuttiness you can taste through the chilli heat.

  • Roasted dal flour — the step that creates real depth of flavour
  • Farm-sourced til and jeera — whole seeds, not pre- ground blends
  • Byadgi chilli — heat with character, plus natural colour
  • Oil in the dough — the traditional chakli technique for that particular crunch
  • Made fresh per order — spirals stay tight and crispy, not soft

Kaaram Chakli (100 grams)

Some snacks are subtle. Kaaram Chakli is not one of them.

This is the one that started everything roasted urad dal flour and chana dal flour blended with Vijay Gold rice flour, Byadgi chilli for heat with colour, farm-sourced til (sesame) and jeera throughout, pressed into those signature tight spirals through a chakli press, and fried in Dhara sunflower oil until deep golden and definitively crunchy.

One bite and the spice announces itself. The crunch follows immediately. The spiral of doom, as the pack says. In the best way.

How spicy is Kaaram Chakli?

Properly spicy. Byadgi chilli gives genuine heat that builds as you eat. If you prefer mild, try Thengozhal or Muthusaram instead.

Why does it taste different from regular chakli?

Roasted dal flour and Byadgi chilli. Most commercial chakli uses unroasted flour and generic chilli powder — this creates a flavour complexity you taste on the first bite.

Does it have sesame seeds?

Yes. Farm-sourced til throughout the dough — small textural pops in every bite.

What's the best way to eat it?

On its own. With chai is good. With curd rice if you want to offset the heat. But it doesn't need accompaniment.

Shelf life?

120 days sealed. Store away from moisture — the spiral structure traps humidity and softens faster than a solid snack.
